I saw Lang Lang perform Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor last night at the Boston Symphony Orchestra. As happens when I am in the presence of genius, I was caught between trying to allow it all to pervade me without obstacle, to fill me with the delight that the composer surely intended; and trying to ward off the recurring thoughts: “You will never make something like this,” and “The world Rachmaninoff describes does not physically exist; it is only present in some of these exquisite chords and is by nature fleeting.”
The latter thoughts are, of course, unwelcome, and would, if left untended, only create bitterness of an artistic and existential sort. I am probably not going to create a Rachmaninoff symphony, but I hope to create something of beauty in my day.
Anyway, you can imagine my delight when I happened upon this quote this morning which perfectly crystallized my thoughts last night:
"Beauty is unbearable, drives us to despair, offering us for a minute the glimpse of an eternity that we should like to stretch out over the whole of time."
Yes. Thank you, Camus.
Went to Astrologyzone, which was linked from The Hairpin, just to see what they’d posted for my sign, Aquarius, for the month of February.
Couldn’t resist re-posting this line: “Life will get even better at the new moon in Aquarius, on February 9, where favor for you will reach new heights. “
New heights! They couldn’t have said it better.
(For context, February 9th is when I jumped into what I thought was snow, from a pretty significant height, but which was actually a belgian block covered in snow. And it’s just been a great time ever since!)
